ELB Engineering Services (Pty) Ltd (ELB), KC Cottrell and the ELB Educational Trust are pleased to announce that together as a Consortium, they have been appointed as EPC contractor for the 25MW Biomass Project by Ngodwana Energy (RF) (Pty) Limited. The project forms part of the South African Government Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPPP), which was recently signed.

The Consortium will erect a biomass plant along-side the Sappi Ngodwana Mill in Mpumalanga, South Africa, which is situated 50km west of Mbombela in the Mpumalanga Province on the Sappi Ngodwana Mill Site. The scope of work is to supply a 25MW Biomass Power Plant which will use waste material from the surrounding plantations to generate power, to feed power into the national grid.

The Power Plant burns the biomass in a boiler to generate steam and drive a turbine to generate electricity. A high efficiency air pollution control system will be utilised on the boiler flue gas to ensure the emissions are well below the new SA requirements. The selected technology suppliers to the Consortium have numerous references on similar projects. The Consortium has been working with Ngodwana Energy since mid-2014 and have had design documents approved by all stakeholders, allowing for quicker deployment of the project.

“The Consortium is honoured to have been appointed as the EPC contractor to supply the power plant for this project, which we believe will become a reference biomass plant for Africa. With our international technology partners we will supply a power plant aligned with the specific requirements of Ngodwana Energy for the South African environment, says ELB CEO, Dr. Stephen Meijers.
ELB is looking forward to an exciting, mutually beneficial, long lasting alliance with our project partners. The project will take 27 months to construct and commission.
